A cool idea for turning your empty attic into useable space by re-engineering your standard roof trusses. Here is a photo that kind of shows how they do it. Another one is found by going to their home page, clicking on "Completed Lofts", and choosing "Dormers Internal View" from the drop-down menu. You can see in that photo how they use a metal "I" beam to re-distribute the weight. I thought it was a neat idea and wondered why more people don't flat-out build their houses that way in the first place. Maybe there's an architectural problem I haven't considered. NOTE: This web site used to have better close-up photos of the technical details involved. I think they must have re-vamped their site to obfuscate the relatively simple process and thus make it more difficult for the average joe to do-it-themselves. Alas.
